Podcast: Episode 133

With Notre Dame preparing to leave the Big East and join the ACC in all sports but football, should the conference members be excited or should they talk to some Big East officials to see how they feel about the arrangement?

Our Big East expert Tom says the move makes sense, but don't expect the honeymoon to last long if Notre Dame starts swiping ACC bowl bids.

It's also nice to have Phil regale us in his tales of watching the Buckeyes from the President's Box, and a look ahead to Cal coming to Columbus. We also give you some insight into the biggest games of the weekend, including Alabama at Arkansas and Florida at Tennessee.

We hope you enjoy the show.

Last week, Phil was at Ohio Stadium watching his Buckeyes and Tom was at Mountaineer Field taking in the WVU game. That's a pretty nice start to the college football season.

As much fun as it was watching our teams pull out lopsided victories, we were both extremely impressed with Nick Saban's Alabama team. The Tide look like they picked up right where they left off in the championship game. Michigan never had a chance, and Denard Robinson did not look like a Heisman candidate.

We also talk about the dismal state of Penn State football, as well as go out west to talk about the Pac-12.

Big hits make Holgorsen chuckle

If you have never met WVU coach Dana Holgorsen, or don't really get him ... well, just watch this short clip and you'll understand completely why Mountaineers everywhere love the guy.

Missed extra point costs Mountaineers back-to-back 70-point games

For the better part of the past seven months, all West Virginia fans wanted to talk about was how the Mountaineers scored 70 points against Clemson in the Orange Bowl.

That near-flawless performance is what everyone expects from Dana Holgorsen’s offense every week.

Well, the Mountaineers delivered a 69-34 win over Marshall in the Friends of Coal Bowl in Morgantown Saturday. If not for a missed extra point by Tyler Bitancurt, WVU would have enjoyed back-to-back 70-point games. no comments

While watching the end of South Carolina's close win at Vanderbilt and the beginning of the Washington State-BYU game, Phil and Tom finally found some time to do a show this week.

Phil gives us his take on what he expects from Ohio State in the season opener against Miami of Ohio, while Tom offers his thoughts on WVU's preseason hype and opening with "rival" Marshall.

We also give our take on some of the biggest games of the weekend, including Boise State-Michigan State and Alabama-Michigan.

It's great to see college football is back on the field and we're glad to be offering you a fresh, new show.

WVU's Austin considered Heisman darkhorse?

Written by Tom Perry on .

That's how ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit sees it. Tavon Austin is definitely the definition of a longshot, but you have to like Herbstreit's logic on this one.

There are a number of factors working against Austin — most notably quarterback Geno Smith will likely take away too many votes if they both have a big season — but it's nice to see someone as influential in the college football dialogue thinks so highly of a Mountaineer.

In case you didn't know, WVU gets the season started Saturday against Marshall. Yep, I'll be there.

We're back on our regular schedule of podcasting now that the college football season is less than two weeks away.

If you like talking about the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Big Ten, then this podcast is for you. ESPN recently provided us with an inside look of the Buckeyes and Phil has noticed the once contentious relationship has really improved now that ESPN friendly Urban Meyer is in charge.

We both agree that Michigan may be the conference favorite, but we're not buying it. There's also some talk about Penn State, Tyrann Mathieu and the preseason polls.

Video: Holgorsen after Day 4 of practice

I'm not sure if Dana Holgorsen is ever happy. OK, maybe a 70-33 whipping of Clemson made him smile. But you can tell the only thing he's really pleased with about practice so far is there are enough bodies on the field to beat on.

The opener is not far away folks.

Here is a quick, but fair analysis of WVU's 2012 chances according to Bill Connelly of SBNation.

I hope to do a season outlook soon.
